Regular dental visits help prevent oral health issues before they become major problems.

A well-chosen dentist, who fits each of your family's unique needs, from routine care to specialized treatments - also forms a trusting relationship that encourages consistent check-ups, helping to prevent issues before they arise.

Ask about payment options - affordability is a key consideration for families. Ensure the dentist offers:
Transparent pricing. Payment plans for extensive treatments. NHS services if you qualify.

Pick a practise that is close to your home, school or workplace.

Remember: Constant Check-Ups Do Matter!

OUCH...
The price of a filling in the Teesside area can differ based on the filling type and also the dental clinic. For composite (white) fillings, you can expect to pay between £70.00 - £150.00 per tooth.
A routine tooth extraction carried out privately can cost from around £73.00 - £145.00.
Consider private dental care for your oral health, many practices offer flexible payment options and finance plans to make treatments affordable. For example I currently pay £14 per month for private health care. This includes check-ups/hygiene x 2 and discounted treatment when needed for the 12 month period.

These days most private clinics invest in state-of-the-art equipment, delivering precise and effective care.
Providing a relaxing atmosphere, making your visits less stressful.

Benefits of Regular Dental Visits

  • Scheduling routine dental visits is crucial for catching potential problems early, including cavities and gum disease. By addressing these issues promptly, you can prevent unnecessary pain, complex treatments and potentially hefty expenses down the line.

  • Plaque can sneak into those hard-to-reach places even with regular brushing and flossing. That’s why it’s crucial to schedule check-ups with your dentist. They know how to tackle those tricky areas, helping to keep plaque from developing into tartar, which can cause cavities and gum disease.

  • Healthy Smile - Consistent dental cleaning effectively eliminate surface stains, resulting in a more radiant smile.

Enamel is the Hardest Substance in the Human Body.

Tooth enamel, the outermost layer of your teeth, is even harder than bone.

Teeth are Unique as Fingerprints. No two people have the same set of teeth. Even identical twins have different dental patterns.

Tooth Decay is the Second Most Common Disease. The only thing more common than tooth decay is the common cold.

Sharks Constantly Regenerate Their Teeth. Sharks can lose a tooth a week, but they constantly grow new ones, so they never run out.

Child's Teeth

Begin brushing your child’s teeth as soon as they emerge, using a small toothbrush with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.

Brush twice daily, for at least two minutes, covering all tooth surfaces. Continue brushing for your child until around age seven, as they may not yet have the dexterity to do it effectively on their own.

Once they start brushing independently, check their technique and use disclosing tablets to highlight any missed areas.

From age eight, you can introduce a fluoride mouth rinse to provide extra protection against cavities. Always ensure your child spits out excess toothpaste.

Adults Teeth

Reduce the risk of problems.

Brush teeth and gums for two minutes twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.

Use mouthwash at a separate time.

Floss or use interdental brushes daily. Limit sugary foods to mealtimes.

The best approach to looking after your teeth is to be proactive - regular visits to the dentist and hygienist will keep your teeth in good condition.

If you look after your teeth in the right way, decay should not be a problem.

Electric v Manual Toothbrush

Electric toothbrush
Tooth Brush Wars

Electric toothbrushes offer superior plaque removal, more consistent brushing, and built-in timers to ensure adequate brushing time. I particularly like the motion pressure sensor brush that illuminates if you place too much pressure on your teeth/gums.

Electric are ideal for people with limited mobility or orthodontic devices.

The manual toothbrush, while more affordable and portable, rely heavily on technique and time for effectiveness.

Both can maintain oral health, but electric toothbrushes often lead to better long-term results with less effort.

Mouthwashing

Benefits of Mouthwash
Avoid mouthwash after brushing

Mouthwash should not be used immediately after brushing your teeth because it can wash away the concentrated fluoride from the toothpaste, which is crucial for protecting your teeth against cavities.
Instead, I tend to mouthwash at different times of the day, just once or twice, in-between brushing.

This offers several benefits: it helps reduce plaque and bacteria, freshens breath, and reaches areas that brushing and flossing might miss. Some mouthwashes contain fluoride, which strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities.

Additionally, mouthwashes with antiseptic properties can reduce gum inflammation and prevent gingivitis.

Using mouthwash regularly can enhance overall oral hygiene, especially when combined with brushing (but not straight after) and flossing.

Water Flosser

Benefits of Flossing

For Christmas, I received a water flosser that claims to be 15 times more effective than manual flossing.

It works by a stream of pressurized water - this removes food particles and plaque between the teeth and along the gumline.

I must admit, my mouth feels significantly fresher after only a few uses, and it is really gentle on my sensitive gums.

Simple instructions if you are using one for the first time, fill the water flosser’s reservoir with lukewarm water - set a low setting at first - gradually increase it as you get more comfortable (my model has 5 settings to choose from).

It comes with a 360 degree rotating tip - It is as simple as aiming and shooting.

But please remember, if you do use one, it must be used in combination with your regular brushing.

It is also dentist approved and recommended.

On amazon there are quite a few models to choose from, mouth water flosser

Going Private

Is it more advantageous to choose a private dentist over the NHS?

Private dentists typically provide more personalized attention during appointments, making it easier to address immediate dental issues and take preventive measures for the future.

They often deliver a higher quality of care due to the absence of funding limitations. Additionally, private practices usually have a wider range of treatment options available, such as orthodontic procedures and teeth whitening.

A Quick Guide to Toothpaste

What is the best toothpaste for your needs, surely they all do the same thing, but have you ever wondered why some brands cost more than others? Does a higher price mean better performance...
